We recently had a wonderful patient visit us who was struggling with chronic, daily TMJ pain and frequent headaches. She had tried various ways to find relief, but the root cause of her discomfort was hiding right in her bite.
The Culprit: A Missing "Canine Rise"
During her comprehensive evaluation, we discovered excess spacing next to her eye tooth (canine). While a tiny gap might seem like a purely cosmetic issue, it actually had a massive impact on her jaw mechanics.
In a healthy, aligned bite, your canines act as natural protectors. When you slide your jaw side-to-side, these strong, long-rooted teeth touch first and force your back teeth to slide apart. This protective mechanism is called canine rise (or canine guidance). It instantly tells your jaw muscles to relax, preventing extreme pressure on your temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Because of the extra space around her eye tooth, her canine teeth weren't making proper contact. Without that protective canine rise, her jaw muscles were working overtime, directly contributing to her Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD).
The Solution: Strategic Invisalign Treatment
We designed a customized Invisalign plan to solve the root issue. By strategically closing the space around the eye tooth and moving the teeth into their ideal positions, we were able to restore her proper canine guidance.
The result? Once her bite could guide itself correctly again, the constant strain on her muscles disappeared. We successfully alleviated her chronic joint pain and headaches!
Disclaimer: While Invisalign was highly effective in addressing this specific patient's malocclusion-related symptoms, clear aligners are not a universal cure for all TMJ disorders. A comprehensive evaluation is always required to determine the appropriate therapy, as individual causes and results may vary.
